Edouard Etienne Alphonse de Rothschild was born on the 27th of December 1957 in Neuilly-sur-Seine near Paris. He is the son of Guy de Rothschild (1909-2007) and Marie-Hélène van Zuylen van Nyevelt (1927-1996) and belongs to the French branch of the Rothschild family.
The Rothschild family has always been involved with horses.
Edouard´s father Guy completed his military service at Saumur alongside the Cadre Noir.
So it's no surprise that his son Edouard started riding as early as age five, at the Deauville pony club. At first the teenager was initially attracted by polo. "But my parents were against it," says Edouard.
After Edouard de Rothschild decided in the late 1990s to start riding again, he was helped by his since ever friend, 1988 Olympic winner Pierre Durand.
"I owe Pierre a great deal of thanks, because he supported me a lot," says Edouard..
What would be a showjumping rider without his grooms?
Nothing at all!
They look after the horses, the health and spend all their time around them.
But sometimes not only do they look after the horses, they have to look after the rider too, especially in the "difficult days"!
